New Year, New Post

2006 Movie #1
Capote (2005)
Friday, January 6, 2006
7:00pm
Dobie Theatre

I knew very little about Truman Capote and was quite surprised to find him be not a very likeable person, at least in the film. Hoffman's performance, as everyone knows, was great. Clifton Collins Jr performance is being overlooked some, it is good too.

Movie #2
Munich (2005)
Saturday, January 7
3:05pm
Alamo Drafthouse Lake Creek
Disturbing, thrilling, and overall gripping, but gets lost in the last act. Hopefully people will heed the lesson that violence just begets more violence.

A little too much jumping around, a little too much conspiracy, a little too long.

I've been quite excited, as this is the first film in a series of Martin Scorcese films at the Paramount over the next few weeks. To my dismay, however, I found that I didn't like this movie. Robert De Niro is stellar, but the story seems to meander. I never understood what was driving Travis Bickle's deteriorating mental status, nor did I really care. I found myself more interested in 'sightseeing' 70's New York City. Disappointing, as I wanted to be amazed.

Donnie Darko - Director's Cut

Movie #47
Sunday, March 20
1:00pm
Dobie

Inextricably, and against all expectation, I loved this movie. I went to see it somewhat intrigued but expected, at best, that I might respect it. From the time it opened with a stellar 80s soundtrack (which fit perfectly) I was totally into this movie. Even when I didn't understand what was going on (most of the time) I enjoyed this movie. Fantastic. Now, I just need to go read up about it.
